Why Choose a Black Greenhouse

A black greenhouse uses a powder coated aluminium frame in place of the mill finish silver that most models come in. The change is cosmetic rather than structural: frame sections, glazing options and assembly are the same as the equivalent silver model.

What changes is how it sits in the garden. A dark frame recedes against planting and fencing, so the eye reads the glass and the plants inside rather than the structure holding them. Silver does the opposite and stands forward, particularly against a dark hedge or boundary.

The Heat Question

It is often said that a black frame warms the greenhouse. It is worth being accurate about this: the frame is a small proportion of the total surface, and almost all the heat entering a greenhouse comes through the glazing rather than the metal.

A dark frame does absorb more solar radiation than a light one, and the profiles themselves will be warmer to touch. The effect on internal air temperature is real but modest, and it is not a reason to choose one finish over the other. Glazing type, ventilation and insulation all matter far more, and the material guide covers those properly.

The Coating

Powder coating is applied to the aluminium and cured, giving a hard finish that resists weathering better than paint. Underneath it, the aluminium will not rot or rust regardless, so a scratch is a cosmetic matter rather than the start of corrosion.

The finish does show marks more readily than mill silver, in the same way a dark car shows dust. Cleaning is straightforward, and the cleaning range covers frame care alongside glazing.

Glazing Choices

Every glazing option available on a silver frame is available in black. Horticultural glass transmits the most light. Toughened safety glass costs more and breaks into blunt fragments. Twin wall polycarbonate insulates better and diffuses light, at some cost to transmission.

A dark frame with clear glass gives the strongest contrast and the most contemporary look. The same frame with polycarbonate reads softer, since the panels are less transparent.

Sizes and Shapes

Black finishes appear across the range rather than on a single model, so the choice of size and shape is not restricted by the colour. The size guide sets out what each floor area allows, and a lean to model in black against a light wall is a combination that works particularly well.
