What Makes a Greenhouse Tall
A tall greenhouse has a raised ridge and higher side walls than a standard model of the same footprint, typically with a ridge above two and a half metres. The extra height changes what you can grow and how comfortable the house is to work in.
The gain is vertical rather than horizontal. You are not adding floor area, you are adding the space above it, and that is where climbing crops and trained fruit actually live.
What the Height Is For
- Vine tomatoes, cucumbers and sweet peas trained up strings, which crop better upright than sprawling.
- Trained fruit and grapevines, which need room above head height to be worth growing under glass.
- High staging that stays usable, since a low ridge makes the upper tier unreachable.
- Working without stooping, which matters more over a season than most buyers expect.
Height also helps the climate. A taller volume of air is slower to overheat, and warm air collecting at the ridge is further from the plants than it would be in a low house.
Ventilation Needs to Match
Hot air rises to the ridge, which in a tall house is well above the crop. That is an advantage only if there is a vent up there to release it, otherwise heat simply stratifies and sits.
Roof vents at the ridge with louvres at low level set up movement through the whole volume. A circulation fan helps where planting is dense, and a maximum and minimum thermometer will show whether the height is working for you or against you.
Wind Load
A taller frame presents more surface to the wind and has more leverage against its base. Anchoring is not simply advisable here, it is what keeps the structure standing, and the base needs to be specified for the extra load rather than treated as standard.
An anchor kit matched to the base type should be fitted during assembly. On exposed sites, consider doubling the number of fixing points.
Heating a Taller Volume
Heating cost follows cubic volume rather than floor area, so a tall house costs more to hold above frost than a low one on the same footprint. This catches out buyers who compare heaters by the square metre.
Insulating with bubble sheet from the protection range cuts the loss, and heating only the lower part of a partitioned house is more efficient than warming the whole ridge.
